Beach extension: Siem Reap to Koh Rong (4 days)

Beach extension: Siem Reap to Koh Rong (4 days)

Cambodia’s leading seaside destination, Sihanoukville is located off a peninsula on the Gulf of Thailand. It is Cambodia‘s gateway to a delightful archipelago of popular off-shore islands. This coastal city has undergone rapid development to accommodate a growing tourism industry. Dining, drinking and partying are in abundance, as well as a wealth of accommodation choices to suit all budgets. The off-shore island of Koh Rong provides great sunbathing and snorkelling experiences. For a more exclusive environment, the nearby small islands of Koh Russey, and Koh Krabey offer the ultimate tropical island experience, without the tourism development seen in other regional destinations.

Itinerary

Beach lovers are in for a treat as we head to the idyllic tropical island of Koh Rong. Catch a short domestic flight to Sihanoukville. We are then driven to the pier to board a shared speedboat for a 45-minute-plus cruise to Koh Rong. After checking-in at the resort, we have the rest of the day free at leisure to start laidback island life, with three days ahead of us to kick back on the island’s powder white shores, explore its jungle interior, or hit the waters to explore other nearby islands. Lunch and dinner are at your leisure. Koh Rong is Cambodia’s largest island and it is blessed with a stunning range of blissful beaches and a rugged jungle interior. The drive is without a guide. Overnight in Koh Rong.

Please note: The official check-in time is 2 pm. An early check-in is subject to room availability.

Unwind on the shore, go beach-hopping, or discover the vibrant underwater world with a free day to kick back on Koh Rong. Koh Rong remains relatively undeveloped, with a smattering of resorts, guesthouses and small communities speckled along its shores. Koh Touch is where the public ferry drops visitors, and this is home to a bustling stretch of lively guesthouses and bars that generally welcome the backpacker crew. Those seeking a deserted island life can catch a boat to northern Lonely Beach, a 7 km stretch of powder white sands without the people. With delicious clear turquoise waters beckoning, a snorkelling session is a great way to dive into the underwater world, or explore the sea by kayak, or paddle-board. Cap off the day with sundowners watching a stunning sunset. Lunch and dinner are at your leisure. Overnight in Kong Rong.

Please note: There is no car or guide available today.

Continue enjoying lazy island life with another free day. Koh Rong is surrounded by a smattering of stunning islands. Why not join a boat tour, or hire a private boat and get exploring? Head to neighbouring Koh Rong Samloem, or super-chilled Koh Ta Kiev. Thrill seekers can choose to get the adrenaline pumping at High Point Rope Park, which offers zip lining through the canopy of trees that hug the island’s interior. A taste of island life can be found at Sok San and Koh Touch villages. Again, round out the day watching another sublime sunset. Overnight in Kong Rong.

Please note: There is no car or guide available today.

We enjoy breakfast and may have free time to enjoy some last moments on the beach before we trade in lazy island life for the cosmopolitan capital. We will check-out and head to the pier to board a shared speedboat four a 45-minute-plus cruise back to the mainland. We then drive to Sihanoukville Airport for domestic flight to Siem Reap. Lunch and dinner is at leisure.

Please note: The drive is without a guide.

Helicopter Ride over the Great Wall at Mutianyu

Helicopter Ride over the
Great Wall at Mutianyu

Take a helicopter ride over the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu. Get a bird’s-eye view of this
impressive structure and see the original watchtowers, lush mountains and pine trees
from up high. Celebrate with a glass of champagne on top of the Wall.

WHY THIS TOUR?

Step back in time to ancient China with a visit to the famed Great Wall, one of the most remarkable structures on Earth. This UNESCO-listed attraction is an incredible feat of engineering. Archaeologists estimate that it once spanned a distance of nearly 10,000 km and it dates back 2,300 years.

The Great Wall actually consists of numerous walls, many of them parallel to each other, that were built over two millennia across northern China. The most extensive and best-preserved section dates from the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) and often traces the crestlines of hills and mountains as it snakes across the Chinese countryside. It is no wonder that walking this ancient wall is on so many peoples’ bucket lists!

TRAIL ITINERARY

Helicopter Ride over the Great Wall at Mutianyu

08:00 - 16:00

The driver and guide will collect you from the hotel and take you to the Great Wall at Mutianyu. A 10-minute helicopter ride over this iconic structure will offer a unique perspective and provide exceptional photo opportunities.

The Wall is said to be the only man-made structure that can be seen from high up in the air. A much lower altitude chopper ride will showcase the magnificence of watchtowers and other prominent architectural features. One of the best-preserved parts of the Wall, Mutianyu was built during the Northern Qi Dynasty (550 – 557) and it has undergone many renovations until the 17 h century. An elevated outlook will also reveal the mountains and landscape covered in pine and cypress trees.

At the end of this exhilarating flight, take the cable car to the top of the Wall. From here, a guided hike on the Great Wall at Mutianyu section marks the end of the exploration.

This section is perched high above the ridge making for a spectacular panorama. Celebrate an unforgettable experience with a glass of sparkling champagne.

Lunch in a local restaurant is also included. At the end of the tour, the driver will take you back to the hotel.

Morning Hot Air Ballooning over Bagan

Morning Hot Air
Ballooning over Bagan

Seeing Bagan from the ground is already a visual feast yet floating nearby the plains of Bagan
with over 2000 temples and pagodas aboard a hot air balloon will even surpass your
wildest dreams. A serene and peaceful bird’s-eye view of an ancient kingdom.

WHY THIS TOUR?

Bagan’s fabled temples and pagodas are a sight to behold. Over 2000 religious monuments are scattered around the Bagan plains, offering respite and solace for Burmese Buddhists and awe-inspiring scenes for visitors who want to grasp the feeling of what once was the centre of an old Kingdom.

This ancient administrative and ruling centre of a bygone era took root in the 8th century but only rose to glory as capital of the First Kingdom of Myanmar in the early 11th century.

By day, Bagan tends to bring out ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ out of visitors but once you’ve tasted the dream of flight, an early morning hot air balloon flight over centuries of magnificence will even silence the most avid travellers from ascent to descent.

TRAIL ITINERARY

Morning Hot Air Ballooning over Bagan

05:30 - 08:00

Hot air ballooning conditions are best in the early morning and an early ride, even before the sun has risen above the Burmese horizon. Your ballooning team welcomes you at the hotel lobby of your Bagan hotel and drives you to the starting point where professional balloonists with years of experience are prepping the balloon for lift-off. Instructions about the safety and how to maximize your aerial enjoyment for the following 45 minutes are clearly explained before embarking the basket. Each balloon can carry between 8 and 16 passengers. Once airborne, you will feel the sensation of flight at the speed of around 15 kilometres per hour floating on cool air streams across the Bagan Archaeological site.

Peaceful, and with your eyes fixated on the rising sun behind the contours of Bagan’s ancient kingdom, the experience of a lifetime now takes more realistic forms. As you are totally taken aback with snapping away as mementoes for later, your pilot will slowly make its way to a designated landing area – his skills include the ability to guide the balloon to a gentle landing on the banks of the Ayeyarwaddy River, or in an open field, where the ground crew supports a safe landing.

It will take some time to catch your breath and share your experiences with your fellow balloonists as the ground team preps the balloon for repacking and ready for another flight the following morning. Your transfer back to your Bagan resort is included, and you will be in time back at your hotel for breakfast and yet another day in magical Bagan.

Private Sunset Cocktail Cruise on Tonle Sap Lake

Sunset Cocktail Cruise
on Tonle Sap Lake

Floating villages, fruit plantations and restaurants: daily scenes when talking about Tonle Sap.
With a backdrop of traditional life as such, watching the sunset with a drink in your
hand aboard a wooden boat makes it just that day’s end a bit better.

WHY THIS TOUR?

An eventful day at the Angkor temples does not have to end at your hotel or heading over to Siem Reap’s Pub Street for a bite to eat and a drink. Within easy reach of Cambodia’s cradle of civilisation lies the country’s largest lake and one of Asia’s dominant sweet water basins.

Tonle Sap’s (or Great Lake) surface dramatically changes in size between dry and rainy season; aligned with this annually returning annual phenomenon, the lake is considered to be one of the world’s richest sources of freshwater fish. This massive natural reservoir forms the décor, alongside admiring local life on the lake, for an intimate sunset cruise with a cold drink, a snack and those you hold dear right next to you.

TRAIL ITINERARY

Sunset Cocktail Cruise on Tonle Sap Lake

16:00 - 18:00

Our English-speaking Khmer guide and driver will be waiting for you at your hotel lobby to bring you over to the Tonle Sap Lake. The embarkation point of the lake lies around 15 kilometres south from downtown Siem Reap. Upon arrival, you will be warmly greeted by the captain of a traditional wooden boat, suitable to navigate the often shallow waters and gliding effortlessly through the floating houses that characterise the stature of the lake.

The vessel sailing towards the sunset is at your disposal and with a cocktail in one hand and snacks in the other; your guide will explain how life on The Great Lake remains as it is for centuries. It is interesting to know that the lake doubles in size (from 3000 square kilometres to over 7500 square kilometres) once the monsoon season arrives. With so much water and an abundance of freshwater fish, many common things on land are here floating, ranging from restaurants, schools, fruit and vegetable plantations to even a police station.

For you and your travel companion, it is pure enjoyment to watch the sun slowly sinking in the west, as your captain slowly sails his trustworthy vessel across the calm lake surface. As soon as the last sun rays left the lake’s surface, we make our way back to the embarkation point, and you will be comfortably driven back to your booked accommodation in Siem Reap.
