The Feng Shui Trail

The Feng Shui Trail

Learn how the ancient philosophy of Feng Shui has shaped some of Hong Kong’s most iconic
skyscrapers on this fascinating excursion. Hear about ‘dragon energy’ and learn how
this traditional Chinese practice invites harmony, wealth and prosperity.

WHY THIS TOUR?

Literally translated as ‘wind and water’, Feng Shui follows the principle of humans living in harmony with nature. This ancient philosophy originates from Chinese respect for the environment and the belief that cosmological influences strongly affect our everyday lives. In modern Hong Kong you might think that the principles of Feng Shui have been dismissed as old-fashioned.

However, many of the soaring offices and apartment blocks that now dominate the skyline have been laid out in accordance with ‘dragon energy’ and the principles of this ancient Chinese practice. This enlightening tour will introduce you to a city that is still very much shaped by Feng Shui, with buildings aligned so that they attract good luck and ward off misfortune.

TRAIL ITINERARY

The Feng Shui Trail

09:00 - 13:00
-
14:00 - 18:00

The guide and driver will collect you from the hotel and take you to the start of this visionary tour. You will start at one of the viewpoints, located high on the island of Kowloon. Look out over the scenic splendour of Victoria Harbour and the runway of the old Kai Tak Airport. The guide will explain how the harbour, the hills flanking Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong’s highest mountain, Tai Mo Shan, all work together to bring good Feng Shui to the area.

The principles of Feng Shui also flourish amid downtown modernity where high-tech towers obey the building codes of this age-old belief. At the harbour front of the Admiralty in the central district, home to the new headquarters of Hong Kong’s government offices, you will find out more about this area from a Feng Shui perspective. In the Wanchai area, you will visit Nine Dragons Wall which is believed to suppress negative influences on the surroundings.

A short ride will take you to Statue Square in Central, Hong Kong’s main commercial and financial district. Here, you can view some of Hong Kong’s most contemporary buildings, including the Bank of China, Standard Chartered Bank and Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC). The knowledgeable guide will explain why the site of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation is known in Feng Shui terms as ‘a dragon’s den’.

At the end of this insightful tour, the driver will take you back to the hotel.

A Night at the
Hong Kong Races

Experience a fun night out at Hong Kong’s historic Happy Valley racecourse and soak up the
electric atmosphere as you take in the horse racing action. Some time spent shopping
for souvenirs at Temple Street Night Market completes a memorable night out.

WHY THIS TOUR?

Whether or not you are a horse racing enthusiast, horse racing in Hong Kong is an experience not to be missed! Beautiful horses, skillful jockeys, crowds going wild – all create an exciting, fun-filled, thrilling atmosphere in a world-class venue.

With over 170 years of history, horse racing in Hong Kong is taken very seriously and it is a major part of the country’s economy. The sport was introduced by the British when they first came to Hong Kong in 1841. Since then, it has become a sport for locals, expats and tourists – who come for the excitement, the sport and the gambling!

TRAIL ITINERARY

A Night at the Hong Kong Races

18:00 - 23:00

At approximately 6pm, the guide will meet you at your hotel. You will take the subway to Causeway Station and then walk to Hong Kong Jockey Club at Happy Valley. Your ticket includes access to the public stand and the racing will start at approximately 7pm. Happy Valley Racecourse was built in 1845 to provide horse racing for British expats living in Hong Kong. At that time, the area was swampland, but on such a hilly island, it was the only flat ground suitable for horse racing. Before the racing starts, you will receive a tutorial to get you race-ready and fully immersed in the racing atmosphere. As the horse racing action begins, you can soak up the electric atmosphere and cheer on your favourite horses.

When the racing is over, you will take the subway to Jordan Street for a visit to Temple Street Night Market. Hong Kong’s liveliest market covers several streets and sells everything from clothes and watches to handicrafts and art works. There are plenty of street food stalls and you may even see Chinese opera singers and fortune tellers.

At the end of the tour, you will return to your hotel by public transport, or you can opt to remain at the market at your leisure.

Cultural Hong Kong by
Foot and Public Transport

Travel by foot, tram, subway and double decker bus for a true taste of old and
new Hong Kong Island. Experience the Peak Tram, the hillside escalator,
iconic districts, a foot massage and a traditional tea tasting.

WHY THIS TOUR?

Capture the essence of Hong Kong Island on this half-day tour. Many of the iconic images associated with Hong Kong come from here – glitzy skyscrapers, opulent hotels, legendary landmarks and looming mountains. Central district, which runs along the north shore, is the beating heart of the island.

This is a hub for business, politics and finance, and also showcases grand colonial architecture. In the shadow of Central’s high rises lies Sheung Wan, an area with a salubrious past. These days it’s a colourful, bustling area packed full of traditional stores, antique shops and markets. And of course, overlooking all this is the Peak, Hong Kong’s most spectacular viewpoint with views of one of the best skylines in the world.

TRAIL ITINERARY

Cultural Hong Kong by Foot and Public Transport

08:30 - 16:00

After meeting the guide at your hotel, take the MTR subway to the Central district. Wander through this dynamic area gazing up at heritage buildings, colonial landmarks, elaborate churches and soaring glass and steel financial towers.

You will then take a walk to Admiralty for an unforgettable ride up Victoria Peak on the Peak Tram, one of the world’s oldest funicular railways that dates back to 1888. The ascent is so steep that the buildings you glide past appear to tilt at impossible angles. At 400 metres above sea level, Victoria Peak is the highest point on the island. The summit provides a stunning bird’s-eye view of Victoria Harbour, the Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island sprawling below.

A double-decker public bus will transport you back into the city, followed by a tram ride to Sheung Wan district. A unique feature here is the escalator, once ranked the longest in the world. The covered stairway traverses an elevation of over 135 metres from bottom to top in the SoHo neighbourhood, home to restaurants, bars, nightclubs and art galleries.

At Hollywood Road, wander past curio and antique shops selling pottery, jewellery, ornaments, coins and carvings. After all the walking, treat your achy feet to a rejuvenating 50-minute foot massage.

Our final stop of the tour is at a tea workshop to learn all about the different types of Chinese teas. After a refreshing cup of tea, you will return to your hotel.

Macau Heritage And Culture Walking Tour

Macau Heritage And
Culture Walking Tour

Delve into Macau’s rich culture, history and heritage on this informative
full-day walking tour. Visit UNESCO-listed monuments and
legendary landmarks, and try your luck in the casino.

WHY THIS TOUR?

This full-day tour scratches beneath the surface of the ‘Las Vegas of Asia’. While Macao is famous for its glitzy casinos and opulent resorts, look a little deeper and you will uncover a historic city with a culture that is a unique fusion of East-meets-West.

Macau was one of the earliest European colonies in Asia and was also the last to be relinquished. It was governed by Portugal until 1999, and as a result has a rich colonial history and two official languages: Chinese and Portuguese. Walking through the old city reveals Sino-Portuguese heritage, ancient temples, Catholic churches and colonial-era architecture. For one day, trade in the bright lights of Hong Kong for the heritage of Macau.

TRAIL ITINERARY

Macau Heritage And Culture Walking Tour

09:00 - 18:00

In the morning, you will meet your guide and make your way to the pier to board a high-speed ferry to Macau. Upon arrival, clear immigration and transfer to the old city to start your discovery of some of Macau’s landmark UNESCO-listed monuments. Visit the Leal Senado building which served as the seat of the Portuguese rulers of Macau. Then move to Senado Square, surrounded by pastel-coloured neo-classical buildings that evoke a Mediterranean atmosphere.

At Lou Kau Mansion you can wander through the rich, intricate interiors and admire the combination of Portuguese and Chinese architecture. Built in 1889, this beautiful Cantonese-style mansion is named after its owner, a prominent Chinese merchant.

Photograph the 16th century Baroque-style Church of Saint Dominic and then head to the 17th century Ruins of St Paul, a Catholic church that was built in 1602 and burned down in 1835. Miraculously, fine carvings and statues can be seen on the surviving façade.

In contrast to the Catholic places of worship, visit the ornate Na Tcha Temple, dedicated to the deity Na Tcha, a legendary figure of China who looks like a child yet has magic powers.

Your final destination is Monte Fort which served as the historical military centre of Macau. If time permits, there is the opportunity to visit a casino ahead of returning to Hong Kong Island by the high-speed ferry.

Lantau Island’s’ enchanting beaches, quaint fishing villages,
ancient monasteries and lush mountains offer a peaceful
escape from the hustle and bustle of the main islands.

WHY THIS TOUR?

Trade in Hong Kong Island’s frenetic activity for the quieter calms of the mountainous Lantau Island, Hong Kong’s largest island. This is home to enchanting beaches, quaint fishing villages and ancient monasteries and temples, nestled against a lush mountain backdrop.

The island is dominated by Lantau Peak, on the top of which stands the Po Lin Monastery and the Big Buddha. The coastline is still home to traditional fishing villages with wooden houses built on stilts in the water, some of which have been converted into restaurants serving fresh seafood caught that very day. This exciting full-day tour introduces you to another side of Hong Kong away from the bright lights of the business metropolis.

TRAIL ITINERARY

Mountains and Monasteries of Lantau Island

08:30 - 16:30

In the morning, accompanied by the guide, set off to the MTR and take the subway to Tung Chung Station. The day’s exploration starts on a high with a ride on the Ngong Ping 360 cable car up to the Po Lin Monastery and the Big Buddha. The elevated journey reveals a sprawling land and seascape with views of the ocean, airport and undulating hills.

On reaching the peak, disembark and discover Hong Kong’s spiritual side. There is time to explore Po Lin Monastery featuring leafy courtyards and captivating architecture containing statues, scriptures, and other holy items. Admire the striking Tian Tan Buddha statue that looks out over Hong Kong Island. Informally known as Big Buddha, the majestic, bronze statue stands at 34 metres high and attracts visitors from across the globe. You can walk around the entire statue and soak up the panoramic views of the surrounding islands and the sea.

After a tasty vegetarian lunch at the monastery, jump onto a bus and journey to Tai O Village, an ancient fishing village set on the coastline. This small community of stilted houses built above the water oozes history and heritage and gives an insight into life in a traditional rural village.

After exploring the small alleyways and paths of the village, hop onto another bus to the bustling coastal town of Mui Wo. From here, you will board a public ferry for the cruise back to the hotel.
