Beach extension: Siem Reap to Koh Rong (4 days)

Beach extension: Siem Reap to Koh Rong (4 days)

Cambodia’s leading seaside destination, Sihanoukville is located off a peninsula on the Gulf of Thailand. It is Cambodia‘s gateway to a delightful archipelago of popular off-shore islands. This coastal city has undergone rapid development to accommodate a growing tourism industry. Dining, drinking and partying are in abundance, as well as a wealth of accommodation choices to suit all budgets. The off-shore island of Koh Rong provides great sunbathing and snorkelling experiences. For a more exclusive environment, the nearby small islands of Koh Russey, and Koh Krabey offer the ultimate tropical island experience, without the tourism development seen in other regional destinations.

Itinerary

Beach lovers are in for a treat as we head to the idyllic tropical island of Koh Rong. Catch a short domestic flight to Sihanoukville. We are then driven to the pier to board a shared speedboat for a 45-minute-plus cruise to Koh Rong. After checking-in at the resort, we have the rest of the day free at leisure to start laidback island life, with three days ahead of us to kick back on the island’s powder white shores, explore its jungle interior, or hit the waters to explore other nearby islands. Lunch and dinner are at your leisure. Koh Rong is Cambodia’s largest island and it is blessed with a stunning range of blissful beaches and a rugged jungle interior. The drive is without a guide. Overnight in Koh Rong.

Please note: The official check-in time is 2 pm. An early check-in is subject to room availability.

Unwind on the shore, go beach-hopping, or discover the vibrant underwater world with a free day to kick back on Koh Rong. Koh Rong remains relatively undeveloped, with a smattering of resorts, guesthouses and small communities speckled along its shores. Koh Touch is where the public ferry drops visitors, and this is home to a bustling stretch of lively guesthouses and bars that generally welcome the backpacker crew. Those seeking a deserted island life can catch a boat to northern Lonely Beach, a 7 km stretch of powder white sands without the people. With delicious clear turquoise waters beckoning, a snorkelling session is a great way to dive into the underwater world, or explore the sea by kayak, or paddle-board. Cap off the day with sundowners watching a stunning sunset. Lunch and dinner are at your leisure. Overnight in Kong Rong.

Please note: There is no car or guide available today.

Continue enjoying lazy island life with another free day. Koh Rong is surrounded by a smattering of stunning islands. Why not join a boat tour, or hire a private boat and get exploring? Head to neighbouring Koh Rong Samloem, or super-chilled Koh Ta Kiev. Thrill seekers can choose to get the adrenaline pumping at High Point Rope Park, which offers zip lining through the canopy of trees that hug the island’s interior. A taste of island life can be found at Sok San and Koh Touch villages. Again, round out the day watching another sublime sunset. Overnight in Kong Rong.

Please note: There is no car or guide available today.

We enjoy breakfast and may have free time to enjoy some last moments on the beach before we trade in lazy island life for the cosmopolitan capital. We will check-out and head to the pier to board a shared speedboat four a 45-minute-plus cruise back to the mainland. We then drive to Sihanoukville Airport for domestic flight to Siem Reap. Lunch and dinner is at leisure.

Please note: The drive is without a guide.

The Sofitel-managed Phokeethra Country Club is Cambodia’s debut international-quality course, offering the best of modern golfing, while retaining the refined ambiance of an exclusive country club. Tuol Sleng Museum and
Russian Market Half-day Tour

Get a glimpse into the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge regime in Tuol Sleng
Museum, the notorious torture and detention centre. In the bustling Russian
Market, shop for inexpensive clothes, handicrafts and souvenirs.

WHY THIS TOUR?

Phnom Penh is both a city of contrasts and a city of extremes. The scars left behind by the Khmer Rouge regime are most tangible in landmarks in and round the capital city, including the notorious Tuol Sleng Museum.

Once a school where children happily played, during the war it became a horrific torture and detention centre. Despite its brutal history, this prison is a must-see site in order to understand the horrors that the local people endured and survived. The Russian Market offers a slice of enjoyment where you can shop-until-you-drop for a wide variety of inexpensive, locally-made handicrafts and unusual souvenirs.

TRAIL ITINERARY

Tuol Sleng Museum and Russian Market Half-day Tour

08:00 - 12:00
-
14:00 - 18:00

The guide and driver will collect you from the hotel and take you to the Tuol Sleng Museum, also known as S-21. During the Pol Pot regime, the former high school was converted into a detention centre. After interrogation, and often torture, prisoners were transferred to the Killing Fields where they were brutally slain. It is said that about 20,000 prisoners entered through the doors of this disturbing facility, never to return to their homes.

You can walk through the hauntingly eerie cells and view harrowing black and white photographs of many of the victims, along with items of rusting furniture. There are even torture devices used to extract ‘confessions’ from the prisoners. This heart-breaking museum serves as a testament to the crimes of the Khmer Rouge.

After visiting the museum, there is ample time to shop at the Russian Market. This bustling bazaar dates back to the 1980s and became a favourite haunt of Russian expats. The distinctive dome of this landmark can be seen from various parts of the capital. Wander through the aisles past stalls packed full of clothes, trinkets, woodcarvings, jewellery, Buddha images and silk scarves. This is a good place to practice your bargaining skills in order to get the best prices.

In and around the market, there are many food stalls selling sweet and savoury snacks. You will get an opportunity to sample sticky rice with banana, a favourite sweet treat of the locals.

At the end of the tour, the driver will take you back to the hotel.

The Floating Villages of Tonle Sap Lake

The Floating Villages
of Tonle Sap Lake

Board a traditional wooden boat for a journey across the great Tonle Sap Lake. Drift silently
across the water to discover floating fish farms and age-old villages. Get a glimpse
into a unique way of life that revolves around this expansive lake.

WHY THIS TOUR?

The Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in South-East Asia. This huge body of water stretches for 250 km – making it seem like an inland sea. During the rainy season from May to October, water flows via the Tonle Sap River into the lake.

During this time the water level is four times higher than in the dry months. In November, the water flows back out in the opposite direction and the level decreases. Due to this unique natural flow reversal, the Tonle Sap Lake is very rich in freshwater fish. This exceptionally productive eco-system was a source of life for the ancient Angkor Empire. Today, its age-old fishing communities supply fish to the whole of Cambodia.

TRAIL ITINERARY

The Floating Villages of Tonle Sap Lake

08:00 - 11:00
-
14:00 - 17:00

The guide and driver will collect you from the hotel and take you to the Tonle Sap Lake. En route, there will be stops to photograph the rural landscape. On arrival, you will board a traditional wooden boat for your navigation over this vast water, the lifeblood of the Cambodian fishing industry.

As you cruise along the river towards the lake, you will pass houses suspended on long wooden stilts. This compensates for seasonal differences in water levels and ensures that homes remain flood-free.

The fishing villages are home to Cambodians, as well as refugees from regional countries. Unable to pay for land, they set up home on the water, thus the Tonle Sap Lake became a refuge for abundant nationalities. In addition to homes, you will also see floating restaurants, a police station, school, church and even floating vegetable gardens. At the floating fish farms, you can observe how fish are cultivated in an enclosed environment.

At the end of the tour, the boat will return to the small pier, where the driver will be waiting to take you back to the hotel.

The Architecture of
Phnom Penh by Cyclo

Visitors with an apt for architecture may have found the tour they’ve been looking for: accompanied
by a local guide with a great knowledge of Phnom Penh and smoothly zigzagging
through traffic aboard a cyclo, new stories unfold during this 3-hour tour.

WHY THIS TOUR?

Cambodia’s capital has seen its fair share of turbulence in the past under the rulings of the Khmer Rouge; large parts of Phnom Penh were severely damaged, and parts of the city have been undergoing major reconstruction work. But the magic remains to dwell through the streets and landmarks – a rustic charm with ample references to its architectonical endeavours. Phnom Penh is a veritable oasis compared to the modernity of other Asian capitals.

With wide tree-lined boulevards and well-designed buildings, Phnom Penh still harks back to the colonial days of this former French playground and the French colonial buildings, much in evidence, add to the ambience. This, and using pedal-powered cyclos, is what makes this half-day exploration of Phnom Penh worth the fabulous views from your slow-moving means of transportation.

TRAIL ITINERARY

The Architecture of Phnom Penh by Cyclo

08:30 - 11:30
-
14:30 - 17:30

Take an exhilarating cyclo ride and take a step back in time to Phnom Penh’s colonial era. This three-hour tour offers an introduction to the capital’s rich history and culture by cyclo, a bicycle powered rickshaw.

We dodge through the traffic as we visit a series of public and private French colonial buildings that date back to 1910. We will enter some of the buildings to explore their inside and view others from the comfort of our ride. We also explore off-the-beaten track Phnom Penh by foot as we visit sites hidden down narrow alleys.

Pick up and drop off from the hotel is by cyclo.

The Angkor Temples
from Sunrise by Tuk Tuk

To add a special touch to master the magnificence of Angkor in one full day, your means
of transportation will be a local Tuk Tuk that will be waiting for you just before sunrise
with Angkor Wat in the background makes it all worthwhile waking up early.

WHY THIS TOUR?

Both hidden behind curtains of green or reaching for the skies, passing the canopy of its jungle landscape, the protected ruins of Angkor unveil something majestic, unbeknownst to those who have not set foot within its parameters.

These encounters can be yours to take up, soak in, and admire from various angles once you opt to head out before the sun rises and watch how stunning a day inside Angkor commences. Adding some authentic transportation flavour to the journey, getting around by tuk tuk entices even the most seasoned traveller.

TRAIL ITINERARY

The Angkor Temples from Sunrise by Tuk Tuk

05:00 - 18:00

Your guide and tuk tuk driver welcome you in the early morning and head to the main gate of the Angkor temples to see the sunrise behind Angkor Wat. Arguably the largest religious building in the world, with a volume of stone equalling that of the Cheops pyramid in Egypt, it is unlike all the other Khmer temples in that it faces west. Its symmetrical towers are stylized on the modern Cambodian flag.

You return to your hotel for breakfast, and we move back into the Angkor temples to admire some of the other inspirational temple ruins that define this proud member of the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Via the South Gate, we visit Angkor Thom. The Great City of Angkor Thom is one of the central points within the whole Angkor Complex, which was probably more opulent than most European cities in the late 12th century.

We continue to the Bayon and the Preah Khan Temple before lunch. The Bayon is a 12th-century masterpiece that lies at the very centre of Angkor Thom City and is an archaeological wonder of symmetry and grandeur. The exterior gallery walls have extensive bas-reliefs but the main features are the towers, each with 3 or 4 gently smiling faces, over 200 in total. Continue to Preah Khan, “The Sacred Sword”, an extensive monastic complex covering over 56 hectares built by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a monastery and teaching complex.

Your three-wheeled motorized vehicle takes us to the Ta Nei Temple and the Tao Keo temple near the Eastern Baray. Both are lesser-known, yet as interesting as all the other temple ruins. Finally, the Ta Prohm was built by Jayavarman VII as a shrine to his mother and is another must-see. While clearing back the forest, it was decided to leave them in place to serve as a reminder of how the original discovers found it and other temples.

Your tuk tuk waits at the Eastern Gate and brings you back in comfort back to your overnight address where you will arrive at around 6 pm.

The Angkor Thom
Kingdom by Tuk Tuk

Part of the magnificence of Angkor is filled in an amazing half-day to the Angkor Thom,
one of the highlights of the whole complex. By tuk-tuk, we will seek out the 200-faces
counting Bayon, the various Terraces and gain an insight into the history.

WHY THIS TOUR?

In true Cambodian fashion, we are embedding the fun transportation element with the historical magnificence of what is peaking on many bucket lists when Angkor is on your travel itinerary.

Tuk Tuk’s are dominating the streets of Siem Reap from early morning until late night, and with its open-air concept, it is an exhilarating way to get a full-frame view of what lies ahead without window glare. Adding The Bayon and the Royal Palace enclosure, and you are in for a fun-filled treat.

TRAIL ITINERARY

The Angkor Thom Kingdom by Tuk Tuk

08:00 - 12:00
-
14:00 - 18:00

This half-day tour will visit some of Angkor’s most well-known temple ruins, and we will use a traditional Remork (Cambodian motorized tuk-tuk) to venture into centuries of history. Your guide and Remork driver will wait for you at your hotel, and we head straight to the main entrance of the Angkor temples. Entry into the expansive realms of the Jayavarman kings of old requires an entrance pass (included in the touring option). After this, we enter the heart of the Angkor temples and drive via the South Gate of Angkor Thom to admire the beauty and learn all there is to know.

Angkor Thom is the last capital of the Khmers, with its Elephant Terrace, the Terrace of the Leper King and the stunning Bayon temple. This 12th-century masterpiece lies at the very centre of Angkor Thom and is an archaeological wonder of symmetry and grandeur. The exterior gallery walls have extensive bas-reliefs, but the highlights are its 218 faces.

Part of the Angkor Thom is one of Angkor’ most distinctive monuments, the Bayon. Known for its 200-plus faces, silent but with the famous half-smile playing on their lips, this former temple is an unmissable stop. Erected by Jayavarman VII, The Bayon (literally “Great City”) is located in the geographical heart of Angkor Thom. The fifty four-tower temple is quite a remarkable sight: it forms a three-tiered pyramid with 54 towers, each dominated by over 4-metres high, mysterious faces facing out to the south, north, east and west. The Bayon is easily the most popular sight after Angkor Wat, and no visit is complete without a trip to see this unique temple. Phimeanakas Temple within the Royal Palace enclosure (pending renovation work) Baphuon Temple, the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King belong to the whole complex and are within easy walking distance of each other.

After seeing some of the amazing details put into these temples that have withstood the test of time, our Remork driver brings you back to your hotel in Siem Reap.

Private Full Day Bike Rental

Private Full Day Bike Rental

A cycling tour is a perfect way to explore the area around town with its traditional local life.
You will head along the local road on the east side of Siem Reap River and spend
a day cycling (around 15 kilometres) through the rice paddy fields.

WHY THIS TOUR?

In search of a more leisurely way to see what lies beyond the Angkor temples? Siem Reap’s landscape, dotted with reminders of the great Kingdom that once was seen as the centre of the universe, has long been overshadowed by the popularity of its temple grandeur…and for reasons unknown.

Using well-maintained bicycles, and for a couple of hours, let us show you why nobody can miss out on the rural side of Cambodia’s most fabled tourism destination. Unlike following in the royal footsteps of renowned Kings of a bygone era, we venture over and across untrodden roads and unpaved thoroughfares to quaint little villages and little-known remains of the Angkor Era.

TRAIL ITINERARY

Cycling through Siem Reap’s Countryside

07:30 - 17:30

Soak up the breath-taking beauty of Angkor from the back of a bike. No trip to Cambodia is complete without exploring iconic Angkor Wat temple, and this full-day tour by bike introduces us to some of the jewels in Cambodia’s temple-studded crown.

From the hotel, we jump on our bikes and head to Angkor Archaeological Park. We spend the morning exploring the ancient capital of Angkor Thom, which is home to several incredible spots. We start at the impressive South Gate before heading to Bayon and its 216 giant smiling faces carved into stone. Next, we visit 11th century Baphoun, the Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of Leper King, Phimenanakas, and the Royal Enclosure.

After lunch at a local restaurant, we continue to Thommanon, root-riddled Ta Prohm and Ta Keo. We round out the day enjoying a spectacular sunset from Pre Rup temple before returning to the hotel by bike or in the back-up vehicle.

Please note: Visitors are required to keep their knees and shoulders covered at all sacred sites.
